I. Lost in the Phantom Field

Konoe was born to a couple of mages, Shuichiro Ayatsuki and his unnamed wife (hailing from Mercury family). While her mother was pregnant with her, it turned out both she and her daughter were in danger due to Konoe's ability to attract seithr. Her father created a Grimoire that would weaken that effect, and fixed it into Konoe's left eye. They started off as a happy, caring family, but it changed when Konoe's mother became pregnant with another child. After giving birth to Celica, Konoe's mother passed away due to childbirth complications. This cause Shuichiro to grow distant from his daughter and become obsessed with his scientific research, believing he should have been able to save his wife. Meanwhile, Konoe started blaming her father for her mother's death and resenting him, focusing all her love and attention on her little sister instead.

When in her early teens, Konoe has wandered into her father's laboratory while searching for Celica, who's gone missing. Konoe found herself transported to a mysterious space called the Phantom Field, which scattered the thoughts and memories of anyone trapped inside. While there, she started referring to herself simply as "Myself" due to the field's effect on her memories. She met an odd, amnesiac girl calling herself "Nobody", who quickly became her guide in her quest to find her little sister. While wandering through the field, Konoe has found scattered fragments of the memories of its previous inhabitant ─ a doll-like girl called Es, who once upon a time fought to save her loved ones and sacrificed herself in the process. While experiencing those memories first-hand together with Nobody, they formed a bond and grew to become friends. Eventually, Konoe was reunited with Celica, but when they tried to get Nobody to leave the Phantom Field with them, the girl refused and forced them to leave her behind. Not wanting to give up on her new friend, Konoe used her father's research to reach the Phantom Field again and confronted Nobody, this time understanding her true nature ─ that Nobody has been Es all along, though she's abandoned her memories due to how painful they were. Using her magic and the power of the Grimoire in her left eye, Konoe managed to send Es back to the world whence she came, giving her a chance to find her happiness there.

II. Mage's Academy and Dark War

Fulfilling her promise to Nobody, Konoe entered the Mage's Academy ─ a school of wizardry and witchcraft. She was quickly recognized as a prodigy thanks to her natural talent and ambition, quickly rising through the ranks of the Mage's Association. She soon became the youngest person to be appointed as one of the Ten Sages ─ the most powerful mages in existence ─ and given the title "Nine", which she started going by from that point on.

At some point, a strange monster called the Black Beast appeared in Japan, killing thousands of people and destroying everything in its wake.

III. Phantom and the world's end

Intelligent but bad-tempered, Nine is usually the smartest person in the room, and she knows it. She's confident in her abilities to the point where she may appear cocky, but she can and will easily put her money where her mouth is. Headstrong to a fault, she wastes no time on pointless discourse ─ her decisions are final and few people can hope to change her mind.

While most people will only get to know her as a hot-headed, borderline rude woman with little interest in socializing, she does have a soft side to her. Her family and friends are the driving force behind her motivation for becoming stronger and never giving up; everything she does, she does to protect her loved ones, even if it's something they disagree with.

The best word to describe Nine is disillusioned. With her father, who tried to sacrifice her little sister for his scientific pursuits, with humanity, who revered her as a hero, only to turn away from her when she was no longer needed, with the world, which turned out to be God's plaything. She's seen the ugly side of life, with all its deceit, deception and hypocrisy, and she despises it.

Despite all of that, she's never hopeless. No, it only makes her more determined to achieve her goal, which is to create a world where the endless circle of pain and suffering ends, and where humanity's lives, death and sacrifices they make along the way have meaning. One where people decide their own fate and reap their rewards... or suffer the consequences.

A world without God.

Nine is an extremely talented and powerful mage; one of the strongest by her world's standards. You can find a handy description of her fighting moves here. Here you can find an example of her fighting style in action.

She wields a variety of elemental spells, though she prefers fire magic first and foremost. Her other spells include water, ice, wind, electric, gravity, teleportation, barriers, etc.

While not much for hand-to-hand combat, she's still very fit and flexible, and her kicks do pack a punch.

She can also summon a demon familiar, Hi no Kagutsuchi, (or even just its limbs) to aid her in a battle.
